The ‘Golden Guys’ arrive at the Straz Center Thursday
Roll over Bea Arthur, and tell DeSantis the news.
Golden Girls: The Laughs Continue, running Thursday through Sunday at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts (Ferguson Hall), is a new, nostalgia-fueled comedy about Dorothy, Rose, Blanche and feisty Sophia in 2023, getting up to all sorts of sex-and-drugs-themed “thank you for being a friend” shenanigans.
It’s also a drag show. All four of the women are played by men, aping the late stars of NBC’s beloved 1985-92 sitcom about “Miami’s sassiest seniors.”
“We are not drag queens,” Vince Kelley, who plays Blanche, told Yahoo Entertainment. “Drag queens are wonderful mythical creatures. Everything they do is political, and they rise to every occasion that comes before them. We’re just female impersonators putting on a show.”
It’s unclear if Disney Enterprises, which owns The Golden Girls, has authorized the production, which has played dozens of cities across the U.S.A. since opening in December.
“Writer Robert Leleux penned an unhinged interpretation of how the Golden Girls would approach the now,” wrote the Maryland Theatre Guide. “This allowed the cast, crew and creative team to pay homage to the personalities and physicalities of the original characters/actors while unleashing a newness and naughtiness – a welcomed style to the theater and drag.”
Golden Girls: The Laughs Continue is for 18+ only. For performances dates and times, and tickets, visit the Straz Center website.
