Founded as the Tampa Bay Classic at the turn of the millennium, the Valspar Championship – taking place through Sunday in Safety Harbor – is one of the most prestigious tournaments on the PGA Tour.

Golfing in Florida in the early Spring? How many professional players can say no to that?

Valspar, a subsidiary of the Sherwin-Williams paint company, has been sponsoring the event since 2013.

Taking place on the Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club’s Copperhead Course, the 2023 Valspar Championship carries an $8 million purse, of which $1,458,000 will go to the winner.

Stephan Jaegar, Ryan Brehm and Adam Schenk (-5) were on top of the leaderboard at the end of Day 1 play Thursday.

Today’s second round will be televised on the Golf Channel from 2 to 6 p.m.; NBC will broadcast live from Valspar 2-6 p.m. Saturday and 3-6 p.m. Sunday.

Country music singer Darius Rucker, of Hootie & the Blowfish, will perform on the Osprey Driving Range shortly after the conclusion of Saturday’s play, at approximately 6:30 p.m. The concert is free to all ticketed golf fans.

Fans and volunteers are encouraged to bring canned goods and shelf-stable food items Sunday, where they will be collected and donated to Feeding Tampa Bay though the AmeriLife Community Food Drive.

Innisbrook told us that the residents no longer wanted weekend golf tournaments at their spot.
