Weekend spotlight: Farewell Palladium, hello Woodz

After Friday’s event in the Palladium Theater’s Side Door Cabaret, the downtown theater will go dark for at least a year. Massive renovations to the 101-year-old building will commence next week.

The Friday show, with local jazz outfit Bryan J. Hughes and the Crew, has been sold out for weeks.

Both the Side Door (downstairs) and the main theater, Hough Hall (upstairs) are closing while the sound, sightlines seating (along with other more cosmetic things) are improved.

The Palladium’s executive director Paul Wilborn guests on Friday’s edition of our Arts Alive! podcast, to discuss the temporary closure, the renovations and just exactly what he’s going to do with himself while his brick-and-mortar baby’s out of commission.

Concert calendar

South Korean singer/songwriter and rapper Woodz performs Sunday at the Mahaffey Theater. The K-pop star, whose real name is Cho Seung-youn, was a member of the groups UNIQ and X1, and landed a massive international hit with “Drowning” in 2023. Saturday at the Mid-Florida Credit Union Amphitheatre: The reconstituted Toto, with founding guitarist Steve Lukather, along with Christopher Cross and the Romantics (“What I Like About You,” “Talking in Your Sleep”). Tickets for the show, which begins at 6:45 p.m., are at this link.

Comedian George Harris, who performs entirely in Spanish, is onstage at 8 p.m. Saturday in Ferguson Hall, at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts. His show is called El Pueblo De Uno. Tickets are at this link.

John Mellencamp is at the Mid-Florida Credit Union Amphitheatre Monday. The veteran Indiana rocker aroused the ire of the White House this week by criticizing the current administration’s re-naming of the Gulf of Mexico halfway through a concert in New Jersey.

White House spokesman Davis Ingle told Fox News Digital: “Nobody in their right mind cares what out-of-touch, woke Hollywood celebrities have to say.”
