Weekend spotlight: Soul man Keith Washington
The ‘Kissing You’ singer and his band will pay tribute to Teddy Pendergrass in New Tampa.

Rhythm and blues singer Keith Washington, whose smooth and masculine baritone brings reminders of Dennis Edwards, Luther Vandross and Teddy Pendergrass, is at the New Tampa Center for the Performing Arts Saturday.
With his band, Washington will play two shows, paying tribute to the late, great Mr. Pendergrass.
Washington wrote Freddie Jackson’s 1988 chart-topping hit “Hey Lover,” and three years later landed his own No. 1 with “Kissing You.” That song won a 1992 Soul Train Music Award, and was nominated for a Grammy.
That same year, he had another hit with “If You Were with Me Now,” a duet with Australia’s Kylie Minogue.
As an actor, Washington appeared on Martin and General Hospital, and shared a scene with Janet Jackson in director John Singleton’s Poetic Justice.
Shows are at 6 and 9 p.m.; find tickets at this link.

The Seminole Hard Rock Event Center welcomes a frequent visitor, comedian Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias, tonight. Tickets for the 8 p.m. performance are at this link.
Oscar-winning actor, writer and director Billy Bob Thornton is at the Capitol Theatre Friday with his longtime band, the Boxmasters. The Catalyst spoke with Thornton and his musical partner, J.D. Andrew, just a few days ago. There’s a ticket link in there, too.
At Ruth Eckerd Hall Sunday: The long-running Canadian band Classic Albums Live. It’s not a costume-wearing tribute act – these folks play entire albums, note-for-note, with extraordinary, musicianly skill. Sunday’s topic is The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, David Bowie’s 1972 rock ‘n’ roll opus. Tickets are at this link.
Sunday at the Seminole Hard Rock Event Center: Ednita Nazario, the pop-singing Puerto Rican superstar, who released her first album in 1973. Find tickets here, although the show is very close to sold out.
Saturday brings George Pennington to the Palladium Theater Side Door Cabaret. The Tampa-based blues, rock, and soul guitarist and songwriter performs at 8 p.m. with his band. Find tickets here.
On theater stages
Tight, playwright Tine Esper’s comedy about a May/December romance (and the 78-year-old protagonist’s name happens to be May) is presented as a staged reading tonight at The Studio@620. The playwright will be in the house, for a post-show talkback with the cast and crew. Here’s the Catalyst interview with Esper from earlier this week.
Jobsite Theater is closing out the summer with a revival of an all-time audience favorite, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged). Here’s the lowdown on this wacky show, with a ticket link.
