Dog waterpark and bar to debut this month

Mutts and Martinis, a new concept that combines a dog park and a full-service bar into one location, will debut May 26 at 2900 Central Ave. The Mutts and Martinis concept is the brainchild of the operator behind the Love My Dog Resorts and the Love My Dog Grooming and Boutique businesses in St. Petersburg. 

County Employment Sites Program wins awards

The Pinellas County Economic Development team received two awards in the past four days for its Employment Sites Program. The initiative won a Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council Future of the Region award under the economy & energy category May 5. The 10-year economic development capital incentive program’s first complete project - Booker Creek South - received the Florida Economic Development Council’s Urban Deal of the Year award May 9.

Pinellas County wins Urban Deal of the Year Award

The Pinellas County Economic Development is the recipient of the prestigious Urban Deal of the Year Award for the Brooker Creek South project. The Florida Economic Development Council presented the team the award Tuesday during a conference in Orlando, according to PCED's announcement. The Urban Deal of the Year Award recognizes economic development organizations for outstanding achievement in the location/expansion of business in the state. The Brooker Creek South, which was the first industrial building supported in part by the Employment Sites Program, is a 130,000-square-foot industrial building completed in September 2022 in Oldsmar’s industrial market that is home to tenants Edmund Optics, Future Development and Design and Belac’s Chromalloy. 

Rays announce gaming program

The Tampa Bay Rays have opened applications to join the Rays Gaming Program and the “Sunburst Invitational.” The video game tournament allows gamers to compete against one another in MLB The Show 23 for a cash prize. State agents bust St. Pete gambling operation

Florida Gaming Control Commission agents executed search warrants Tuesday at illegal gambling locations in St. Petersburg, Tampa, Fort Pierce and Delray Beach. The St. Petersburg site was an unnamed building at 2116 34th St. S. In total, agents seized over $1 million in assets, cash, slot-style gaming machines, computers and ATM machines.

City officials donate 290 bikes to nonprofits

The St. Petersburg City Council recently approved giving 290 bicycles leftover from a previous bike share program to the St. Petersburg Bike Cooperative and Free Bikes 4 Kidz. The city has received 300 new e-bikes from Lime as part of a modernized program. A city document states the two nonprofits will convert the pedal bicycles for personal use and have the capacity to store and distribute them to people in need.

Kforce sees business growth despite drop in revenue

Tampa-based Kforce, a large solutions firm specializing in technology and other professional staffing services, announced results for the first quarter of 2023, which indicates a revenue of $406 million - a 2.6% year-over-year decrease. "While first quarter revenues were at the low end of our guidance, our technology staffing and solutions business continued to grow on a year-over-year basis even off of tough prior year comparables. We are pleased that earnings per share was at the midpoint of our expectations reflecting our highly variable and performance-based cost model," president and CEO Joseph Liberatore said in an earning's release. "Despite the recent slowing, we firmly believe that the strength of the secular drivers of demand in technology, which accelerated coming out of both the Great Recession and the pandemic, remains intact.”

Bayfront Health to double nonprofit’s grant funding

Officials with the Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg announced Tuesday that Bayfront Health St. Petersburg would match its grant funding, bringing the total from $1.5 million to $3 million this year. The news coincides with the Foundation naming former deputy mayor Kanika Tomalin, who also served as the hospital’s vice president of strategic planning & public affairs, as its new CEO. The city sold the former Bayfront Medical Center to fund the Foundation’s launch in 2013.

Local golf tech company is acquired

 Pure Science Golf, a custom club fitter and golf company in the Clearwater area, has been acquired by local golf entrepreneurs. Jackson Stroup, founder of the new direct-to-consumer golf club brand ALTR Golf, partnering with local club fitting expert and PGA Professional Shaun Van Patten, took over the business last November, according to an April announcement. "Since taking over, we have relocated and remodeled the facility. We have also optimized overall operations while implementing today’s most advanced golf technology to further deliver truly differentiated club fitting and instructional experiences," Stroup said in a statement. Pure Science Golf uses tech for custom golf club fitting and has simulators that feature industry-leading ball-flight tracking and provides an analysis of someone's swing. 

Tampa Bay Economic Development Council names new VP

Officials with the Tampa Bay Economic Development Council announced Monday that Mitchel Allen will serve as their new Senior Vice President of Economic Development. The organization is the lead economic development agency for Hillsborough County and the Cities of Tampa, Temple Terrace and Plant City. Allen previously served as the executive vice president of business development for the Greater Richmond Partnership in Virginia.

Welch to hire Chief Equity Officer

St. Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch, who recently announced he would create a Chief Equity Officer position for the city, said the CEO will be a member of the Mayor's Cabinet and will report directly to Chief of Staff Jordan "Doyle" Walsh, according to a Monday news release. The position was created to support the administration's focus on inclusive progress, and in response to the Structural Racism Study conducted by the city in 2021. The officer will have oversight to ensure equity and inclusion are fully integrated into City government policies, procedures and practices. 

Rays rally in front of record crowd

Despite facing a 6-0 deficit heading into the fifth inning, the Tampa Bay Rays came from behind to beat the New York Yankees 8-7 Sunday afternoon. Isaac Paredes’ clinched the game with a 10th-inning RBI single in front of 32,142 people - Tropicana Field’s largest regular-season home crowd in seven years. The Rays still lead the majors with a 28-7 record and took the season’s first series against the Yankees two games to one.
