Three local artists have been chosen by the Creative Pinellas organization for the second phase of the South Pasadena Mural Project. Cecilia Lueza will paint at the South Pasadena Shopping Center, Sydney Prusso at Pasadena Bar and Grill and Ximena Sousa at Kimberly Nails. The latest murals in the ongoing community beautification project are scheduled to be complete in late April.
WalletHub recently released its annual “Hardest-Working Cities in America” rankings, and St. Petersburg placed No. 38 - nine spots below Tampa. The personal finance platform’s researchers compared the 116 largest cities across 11 metrics, including hours worked and employment rates. St. Pete ranked above Jacksonville and Baltimore, traditionally considered "blue-collar" cities.
St. Petersburg-based Raymond James Financial reported that the company now oversees $1.38 trillion in client assets, a new record. The wealth management firm added $152.2 billion in assets from January 2023 through January 2024. The milestone marks the third consecutive record-setting year for Raymond James.
Racing fans can get a first look at the 20th annual Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg’s official show car this weekend. Mint House, the event’s official hotel partner, will host the IndyCar replica Sunday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at 77 11th St. N. in the city’s Edge District. Grand Prix festivities begin March 7 before a weekend of racing starts March 8.
Lonestar Data Holdings became a part of space history at 6:24 p.m. Thursday when Intuitive Machines’ lunar lander, Odysseus, landed on the Moon. Lonestar operates from the St. Petersburg Innovation District’s Maritime and Defense Technology Hub, and its payload aboard Odysseus successfully transmitted data to and from space. A digital copy of the Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights are now safeguarded on the Moon, where Lonestar plans to store the world’s data. The mission marks the first time a U.S. spacecraft has reached the lunar surface since 1972, and the first time in history a private company accomplished the feat.
The U.S. Department of Justice announced Tuesday that it charged a Pinellas Park man with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering for a cryptocurrency scheme that bilked investors out of $300,000. Authorities allege that Devin Rhoden, 24, conspired with another man from Alabama to create and market a non-fungible token collection and abandon the project without meeting obligations, also known as a rug-pull. If convicted, the two men face up to five years in prison and must forfeit the proceeds.
Forbes, in partnership with market research firm Statista, has released its annual list of “America’s Best Large Employers” with over 5,000 employees. St. Petersburg-based Raymond James Financial placed No. 45 out of 600. Forbes ranked global manufacturing company Jabil, also headquartered in the city, as No. 291.
To make way for the upcoming Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg (March 8-10), the Saturday Morning Market will move to 2nd Avenue and 5th Street North March 2. This Saturday (Feb. 24), the Saturday Morning Market will be in it usual location, in the Al Lang Stadium parking lot. There will be no market March 9, and it will return to the Al Lang site March 16.
The U.S. Department of Commerce and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced Tuesday that Tampa Bay Wave was among 16 business accelerators to receive a combined $3.9 million in grants. The St. Petersburg-based organization received $250,000, the highest amount awarded in the first phase, to help advance companies and products that address climate resilience. The money will help launch the Tampa Bay Wave, Innovation District and the University of South Florida St. Petersburg's “Catching the Blue Wave: Accelerating America’s Ocean Economy” initiative.
Bayfront Health’s local facilities will drop “St. Petersburg” from its moniker and transition to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital starting March 1. Pinellas County’s only adult trauma center will feature new temporary signage immediately, and workers will install permanent signs later this year. Hospital officials believe the new identity will help eliminate confusion between healthcare networks.
The City of St. Petersburg’s Library System and Parks and Recreation Departments will host a Community Enrichment Job Fair on Saturday, March 2, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. The event takes place at the Campbell Park Recreation Center and will highlight full-time, part-time and seasonal job opportunities that pay at least $15 an hour. Pinellas County’s Emergency Management department is updating its Special Needs Evacuation Program and will call all 4,500 registrants within the next two weeks. The program provides transportation and shelter for residents with medical, functional and transit challenges during emergencies.
