Former Governor and Congressman Charlie Crist, a St. Petersburg Democrat, could soon receive an ambassadorship. A White House spokesperson announced Wednesday that President Joe Biden is nominating Crist to become the Representative of the United States of America on the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), with the rank of ambassador. The Senate must still confirm Christ’s nomination.

Clearwater-based yacht retailer MarineMax has acquired C&C Boat works, a family-owned Minnesota boat dealer. The deal terms were not disclosed in the recent acquisition. "This is a business we have known for many years, one that shares our team-focused culture and dedication to service excellence. The addition of C&C Boat Works, which follows our 2021 acquisition of Nisswa Marine, enhances our ability to serve customers and realize further efficiencies across our operations in the region," MarineMax CEO Brett McGill said in the June 2 announcement.

According to a recent report by Usafacts.org using Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) data, Tampa has seen the nation’s sharpest spike in heat wave frequency. The EPA defines heat waves as two or more days where the temperature is “abnormally and uncomfortably hot” and “outside the historical averages for a given area.” In addition to frequency, Tampa’s heat wave “season” has gained 92 days since 1961, the third-most in the country.

Real estate firm REM Capital has officially broken ground for its micro-unit apartment complexes at 770 4th Ave. N. in St. Petersburg. The micro-unit complexes dubbed Ellington Place, named after American music legend Duke Ellington, will feature over 220 units in the dual-branded complex. One of the buildings will be developed at 200 17th St. N. in the Edge District. REM Capital’s units will range from 450 to 750 square feet, with rents ranging from $1,800 to over $2,500.
U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor and leadership from Evara Health, formerly the Community Health Centers of Pinellas, announced today that $2 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will go toward confronting the Black maternal health crisis. The funding will help improve health outcomes for patients at high risk for maternal morbidity and mortality. While awards were made across the country totaling more than $65 million, Evara was the sole Florida awardee.
St. Petersburg College and the Florida Solar Energy Center have partnered to provide more certified solar workers. According to the announcement, the new course represents the nation’s first solar energy apprenticeship program registered with the U.S. Labor Department. Students receive hands-on and in-classroom training before graduating with their North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners certification.
