Daily nonstop Tampa-to-London flights launch in March

Beginning in March, Tampa International Airport will have daily nonstops to both Heathrow Airport (LHR) and Gatwick Airport (LGW). The airport announced airline Virgin Atlantic will offer the daily nonstop service. Additionally, British Airways will also offer daily service to LGW, an increase from its current five-day schedule. 

Tampa Bay among post-pandemic job recovery leaders

A recently released analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data by the Economic Innovation Group found that the Tampa metro area ranked sixth nationally for year-over-year job growth. The region’s workforce increased by 4.8% from December 2021 to December 2022. Dallas placed first, at 5.9%, while the national rate was 3.1%.

Red tide makes a return

Bloom concentrations of Karenia brevis, the organism that causes red tide, are back around southern Pinellas County. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Friday update shows low and medium levels are present along the St. Petersburg beaches and the mouth of Tampa Bay. It also relayed reports of fish kills and respiratory irritation around the area.

Tampa Riverwalk ranks No. 2 in award competition

Tampa's Riverwalk, which will be extending, has been ranked the nation’s second-best riverwalk by USA Today’s Reader’s Choice Travel Awards competition. Detroit’s International Riverwalk claimed the top spot. This is the first time Tampa has been nominated in USA Today's Reader's Choice Travel Awards, which selected 20 riverwalks across the U.S. and let online voters determine the top 10 winners, according to the recent announcement.   

Bayfront Health conducts mass casualty training

The National Guard’s 48th Civil Support Team, St. Petersburg Fire Department and Bayfront Health St. Petersburg joined forces Wednesday to conduct mass casualty decontamination training. The exercise sought to prepare the organizations for a harmful chemical spill. The Pinellas County Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) Team set up a decontamination tent at the hospital and led its staff through proper procedures.

Temporary roller skating rink coming to The Pier

Pier Events LLC, contracted by the City of St. Petersburg to create events on The Pier, will operate a 6,000-square-foor roller skating rink March 10-April 9. Located next to the Tilted Lawn and the Splash Pad, the all-ages rink will feature themed skating nights and special events such as Tik Tok Tuesdays, Britney Night, Pride Night, '90s Night and others. St. Petersburg issues record number of permits

City data shows that building officials issued 36,800 permits in FY2022, which brought in $9.3 million in revenue and equates to $1.3 billion in construction value. That set a new record, as Mayor Ken Welch noted during his Jan. 30 State of the City address. A building official told Spectrum Bay News 9 that the city could reach $1 billion in construction value again this fiscal year.

School officials plan bus route changes to reduce tardiness

Pinellas Schools Superintendent Kevin Hendrick unveiled several measures to make bus routes more efficient and limit the need for additional drivers at a school board meeting Tuesday. Those include surveying students to determine who intends to use buses this fall, combining routes for schools near each other, and reducing arterial stops near main roads for school choice programs from 383 to around 30.

Police chief gives federal grant to youth sports

St. Petersburg Police Chief Anthony Holloway is using a $173,983 federal grant to assist 20 local youth sports leagues and provide year-round tutoring. He and Mayor Ken Welch will make a formal announcement at Wednesday’s opening day ceremony for the St. Pete PAL (Police Athletic League) x Wildwood Baseball Powered by Bo Bichette baseball league.

SunRunner to be fare-free through November

The Pinellas Suncoast Transit authority's SunRunner service, a 10.3-miles bus rapid transit line, will continue to be fare-free for riders through November, PSTA announced. The BRT line, connecting through downtown St. Petersburg and St. Pete Beach, was expected to end the fare-free service in April. To date, more than 260,000 people have used the SunRunner. 

City hosts job fair

The City of St. Petersburg is hosting a job fair Saturday, Feb. 25, for available positions at its golf courses, library system, childcare, and parks and recreation departments. The starting wage for city employees is $15 an hour. The job fair will be hosted from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lake Vista Recreation Center.
